Hi,

On a recent holiday I got to visit to Yuen Po Bird Market in Hong Kong.

They aren't all of finches, but I hope you find them of interest.

There were very few Australian species, there were 1 or 2 cages of zebs, 2 pair of gouldians, 1 cage of quarrions, 1 or 2 cages of budgies and a pair of what I think were short bill corellas.

Photo 1 - African Grey
Photo 2 - Zosterops / White eye / Silvereye
Photo 3 - Chinese Hwamei / Laughing Thrush
Photo 4 - dunno but keen to find out
Photo 5 - Red-billed toucan (a long way from home in South America...)
Photo 6 - Pekin Robins (I wanna cry - all males as well, no doubt)
Photos 7 and 8 - Zebs and Java finches
Photo 9 - Melba finch (cock bird)
Photo 10 - Magpie Robins
Photo 11 - Green singer
Photo 12 - Chestnut finches
Photo 13 - dunno, but gorgeous
Photo 14 - Gouldians

Oh, and I think the birds in Pic. 12 are either Bronze Winged mannikins or Javan Munias

The pictures are good and it backs up opinion that the Chinese are the most interested people of Asia when it comes to cage birds.
I am surprised that even a few African species are getting to their market as the demand for birds in Europe seems to be getting the lions share..
The Magpie Robins seem to be expensive for a local bird $HK850 = $A122 each but here around $2500 per pair.

Yeah the market was great. Apart from the very small cages, all the birds looked in pretty good condition. I think the Chinese regard the birds especially the singers as good luck, apparently the birds sometimes get taken to the horse races to bring luck.

As for the prices, not many of the birds had prices, so i'm not sure if these kind of prices were typical.

Craig - as for the Pekins there was at least 6 cages with that many birds in it

ahhh the pekin robin... Personally I prefer the rubythroats (geez, officer, this straightjacket sure is limiting my movement!!!! )
