GRARGH!

I just lost both my remaining double bars!!!! The first, I was lifting the cage and the door slid open, and one of the two birds escaped,

Later in the day, I picked up the cage again, to take the remaining bird back to the aviary, and the bottom fell off the cage! I spent 1/2 an hour catching quails, 2 of which inhabited the same cage, and by the time I finished the double bar had dissapeared.

The most annoying thing, as if it weren't bad enough, was that as soon as they escaped, they starting doing the courting song, which I had been trying to get them to do since march 09!!!!!!!!

I hope no one else is having such bad luck. Always check the bottom of your cages when outside and moving them!

Bumer Jay,All may not be lost yet if you still have other d/bs in the aviary.Twice i have had these birds escape. once i left the safty flight open and they flew in there only to be trapped again.And once they fly back into the aviary through a hole in the roof i didnt know about.

What are double bars like to keep (before they got away), have been looking at a few new varieties to keep nad this particular bird has interested me a little, Would you need a licence for these birds in the ACT?

They are great birds to keep , you will need at least 6 to appreciate them . They are hypo and the first to warn others that someone or thing is approaching the aviary by hooting like owls all at once.
They like room to move sunshine , love the rain , lots of greens and plenty of water to splash in.

Oh no, what a shame, maybe Gomers idea will work for you, if you leave food and water out for them.

Definately worth putting dishs of food and water in the safety cage and leaving it open.
Or in a small cage on top of the avairy.
Have caught the occassional escapee that way myself.

Too late now. I saw them fly away over the roofs and down the street, and they haven't been around for ages.

That's the last of my double bars.

Yeah, lovely birds in the aviary - very quiet and very mixable!
Licenses are required n the ACT but it takes ages for it to arrive (for me, 9 months! ) so don't line up the birds before sending off the license form.

Jay where do you apply for the licence from? I am considering DB's plus possibly Diamond Sparrows or Red Brow and it seems these need to be licenced as well. Just what do you get for the licence fee or is it just a cost applied by Gov to dedicated finch lovers?
