Pied

I keep reading in differing articles about pied variants of that particular species but no one ever explains exactly what this means. It may sound like a basic question to the more experienced keeper/breeder but for a relativly newbie I am not satisfied I really understand the terminology (I have an idea) or how to identify this trait. Can someone with a little more knowledge help me out here

Pied = white or yellow feathers - on a bird and in a location, that otherwise would not have this colouration.
Well that's my best way of explaining it.
Some pieds are marked fairly evenly and are beautiful, like Ruddys, Zebs and Bengos.
Some pieds are marked in a very mottley way and are yuk, like Parrott finches and Cordons.
Please note the abaove 2 sentances are purely my oppinion and will almost certainly be disputed by others with different tastes. ;)

I think the member best suited to answer this could be fincher, I seem to recall that he has/had a few pied birds in his collection. if your lucky he may have a few photo's he could use to show you the difference between pied & normal birds.
cant argue with finchbreeder's description though

Would have to agree here as well i have pied redface and cordons with parrot finches who have different pied versions light medium and heavy pied.
also the lower mantle tends to be lighter as well in the parrot finches
