the funny thing is, i didn't think any of the birds were breeding!

but nonetheless i came home from work today and found two firefinches more than usual. what's even more special is - with the exception of some sporadic placement of mealworms that seem to be largely ignored, i seem to have succeeded in fledging waxbills without any real upkeep of live food!

its a nice warm night tonight. they should be okay. but this is a first for me, so being an overprotective parent i must ask - is there any advice to care of these little guys?

My one and only ruddy fledgling hatched out last April with no live food supplied to parents previously. Only thing I would have had in the aviary then was a terracotta heat lamp.
Funny, since I have been supplying live food they havnt had any more chicks.....too busy eating I guess

My ruddy hen is very interested in the orange breast cock - and vice versa. will have to intervene eventually but we'll see how it goes...

My poor Ruddy is a Batchelor
He hangs out at various times with the pair of painteds or the pair of orange breasteds.
They are similar colour/size so I guess that feels a bit like a mini flock for him.
Anyone got a split pied Ruddy hen for sale?

thanks everyone! they seem to still be doing well. i figure that being my first borns - regardless of sex they will probably stay with me for life. just seem the right thing to do!

jayburd - don't hold me to it - but i don't think ruddies can hybridise with OB's, being different genera and all.

bluebutterfly213 - the weather here is really warm at the moment- so i they should be okay, but i think this winter i might invest in some extra insulation for the aviary - be it plastic curtains or a head lamp or both. i'm going to have a second crack at tri-coloured parrotfinches, maybe some goulds.

This is what my mum said - but apparently (according to reliable sources AND pics) a ruddy (Lagonosticta)and a star finch (Neochima) can hybridize??? they don't even come from the same country. By the way that info was in a Birdkeeper Magazine.

So I wouldnt be too surprised about young hybrids from my two.

I rekon as long as there kept draght free and out of the wind u will be fine.
