well I'm able to talk about it now , been to annoyed with myself to mention it up till now .....was a bit bored Saturday so decided to have a close look at scarlet baby just out of nest , don't know what i was thinking but I got him out and was about to put him back when he flew off.
2 yards later in my pj s and with the princess right beside me we lost him in the 3rd yard which had a big big dog in it.
Of course it then rained and the temp dropped down to about 6 that night so no hope there ,stoopid .

Done the same recently with one of my first ever fledg's. Being clumbsy learner flyers, it flew erratically at me while i was hopping out and managed to somehow escape. Over the back fence it flew, and into the vast open paddock. I tried to keep a track of it but lost it. I wished it the best. Five minutes later, had a 2 minute rain downpour. I'd like to think its survived. Very Very slim, but its a nice thought i will hold onto. These things happen...

Sorry to hear. Situations like this prove the wisdom of having double safety cages/doors.

I did something similar to this yesterday, deb! I was handling one of the baby zebs I have atm, they've just fledged. he was sitting on my finger, and I completely forgot about him! I got about 10m from the aviary before I realized!!!
I returned him to the aviary hastily, but I'm sure glad he didn't get away1
