Hi folks, to what degree will the following finches tolerate nest inspections?

- Painteds
- Ruddies
- Orange Breasts

once the painteds are used to you being in & around the aviary and nest site they wont mind you looking, but no touching.
as for ruddies & orange breasts, if you try to inspect one of their nests there is a very high probability that they will abandon the nest.

So how can you go in the aviary if there are other bird species that need tending to. e.g. canaries, Gouldians etc? Can you still enter the aviary, just not go near their nests?

There is a big difference in nest inspection and entering your aviary.
I have never worried about entering my aviaries but I Do Not fiddle ,poke or inspect nests due to being a sticky beak.
I suppose if I was in the UK or Europe where breeding is done in a bird room with breeding stock that has been raised under constant nest inspection then I guess I would do it. Our stock is mostly aviary raised(few exceptions) and losses will be experienced with unwanted nest inspections. A quick glance can even be a risk to some birds.
I just wonder why people drag chicks from their nest to photograph, I am sure the chicks parents would be thrilled with the interference.
Be patient and know your birds and you can enjoy the young fledging normally.

Only time I ever "inspected" orange breasteds nest they abandoned, and the chicks were feathered. :( Mind you I had not set out to inspect a nest, I was just cleaning out the avairy and discovered the nest in a pile of grass, that I had left in there for birds to use as nesting material, which was getting crappy. :o

I reckon it depends on how often u go in your aviaries and what your birds are used too. I'm in and out of mine twice a day. My oranges just fledged 2 babies, I checked the nest maybe 2 or three times a week, with no issues. The parents did nest under the shelf right under where one of the 'daily' trays goes. The cordons also fledged two the day before and same inspections as the oranges.
