I have not personally, but have considered using for the fact that they could be sterilized. If holes were drilled to allow nest to breath I cant see a problem as I have seen a lot of people use gourds.

Haven't used them myself, but have seen a multitude of different items being used, baby food tins with the plastic lid cut in half, plantpots, half baskets.
I have found a use for PVC pipe though. I cut a short length, wired it to the aviary and use it to hold branches or brush.
Side note to this story.
I had seen a pic some galv holders in someone's aviary with branches in them, thought it was a great idea and tried to find some. I came up with the pipe idea while waiting to find the real branch holders. When I was at the fodder store today I saw some of these "branch holders" and asked the guy how much they were. He looked a bit puzzled, so I showed him what I meant.
He said "Well I reckon you could use them for that, but what they really are, are killing funnels, when killing a chicken the head is put into the funnel and the funnel holds the body securely while the head pokes through the hole at the end at the right angle for the chop. Talk about embarrassed

I use the semi round galv post brackets, similar to this:

Have tried them, but my finches didn't seem keen so did like Diane and turned them into branch holders. Now the finches like the branches heaps more.
