the red colour on the male goes back past the eye, the hens not so far. Also when/if you can see them sitting together the males is a slightly brighter plumage.

I have a pair of these. Or so I was told by the dealer. Anyway, how would you know? Is there any way to tell from their behaviour? They seem to hang out together and I'm pretty sure I have seen only one of them singing.

Depending on the quality of the birds, the hen bird is slightly lighter in build, has less amount of color on face,Beak is not as broad at the base.some females when young are hard to tell they will sing but not as much as cocks.hope this helps and not confuses.

They can be sexed by the vent which is acurate.
Generally I sex them by the extra red behind the eye,its not 100% but close enough for me.
Also if there are a couple of red feathers around the vent its odds on it is a male

I have four red faced, I suspect 3 males and a hen. Is there any harm to my breeding chances if I left all four in the aviary, or should I take the 2 spare males out? What do you think? The aviary is conventional, about 7m2 in area. I currently have the parrot finches in there, a pair of canaries and two gold finches. I am also going to throw in a couple of pair of Goulds as soon as I pick up some young birds.
Thanks.

over my short time I've had 8 of these amazing little christmas decorations

I sec them by size, colour and singing. I lie to sit in front of the aviary for a while every day, so I usually see them singing.

Gouldians and parrot finches can hybridize so you would have to be careful of the extra PF males and any spare Gouldian hens.

Wow, really? Thanks for that, I'll keep it in mind.

Placed my nest boxes in the aviary on Saturday, and the nesting material on Sunday afternoon. Had a look today and one of the boxes is jam-packed and a nice little nesting chamber lies inside. Next step, some eggs. Fingers crossed.
currently, the ones I suspect are males have white leg rings, the suspected hen nothing. i am thinking of adding another ring to the males with differant colours on each so I can try to work out the pair. That way if I need to remove the two spare males I'll know which is part of the pair. Thoughts?
