Does anyone know if there are any finches native to the central highlands ? I have lived and travelled a lot of this big broad land and seen finches of one type or another everywhere I have been, except here. We re on 11000 acres and been here almost 2 years. I have never seen a wild finch. We have galahs, sulphur crested cocky's, rosellas, king parrots, cockatiels, rainbow lorikeets, wedgetails eagles, kites, bustards, and even have emus nesting close to the houses and sheds, and every other bird species known to Oz, but not 1 finch, I just thought it strange ?

mate you need to be a bit more descriptive for us west aussies where are the central high lands ....pete

I have seen redbrows around the Mittagong / Bowral area. You should see Redbrows and possiblely Double bars, Diamond firetails, if you are really lucky maybe a Beautiful firetails. Refer, google, Southern Highlands bird list on the last page.

Am I mistaken or are you talking about the Central Queensland Highlands?????.......I'm not familiar with the are, I've spent a bit of time on the Darling Downs, St George, Surat are and been to Carnarvon Gorge as a kid.........heaps of finches in all those haunts.....DBs, Zebs, Redheads, Diamonds

Would be a good variety of finches there , only problem is seeing them . We have plumheads here along the river and I have glanced them but they dont sit still long enough to get a good look.
Got me buggered how they pics of them in the wild.

If you've got cats or ferals nearby, even on 11000 acres you'd be had pressed to find a finch or any other small birds, wrens, chats, robins ect. You should be seeing redbrows, double bars, zebbies, blackthroats,plumheads, diamonds & chestnuts, may also be the odd star.

Yeah sorry did fill out my profile when I joined but it was gone again. We are on wireless broadband and it drops in and out and sometimes you post as the signal drops out and then you find out later when you can get back on that everything you typed has vanished. Good on ya Telstra, lol.

Yeah there are thousands of feral cats here, they are all over the district. I am always observant of the wildlife around the area, and can honestly say I have never seen a finch, from here to Emerald, to Clermont and across to the gemfields. Now that you mention it the only small birds I have seen are willy wagtails, and the odd quail. We have a large irrigation dam (500 acres) and the water birds are plentiful, as are all large birds, maybe we need to shoot the cats instead of igs
