Hi there all. After receiving the link to your forum from MickP I have browsed a bit and finally activated my account. Thanks for all the great info you share. I hope to continue learning from those far more experienced than myself.

A small intro:
I blame my husband for getting me hooked on finches. He rescued a few Zebras from a local petshop a few months before meeting me. He built them a little aviary and was happy to let them live their lives out there. They were comfy and happy, well fed and had recovered from their featherless ordeal at the pet shop by the time I got introduced to them. I took an instant liking to these chipper little critters and in no time at all I was breeding them... introducing new bloodlines and mutations and one thing let to another. Now I have a MUCH bigger aviary with various species of finches. I tried to do an all african finch aviary, but it is difficult to source them so a few exotics and australian species have found a home there now too.
I have an outdoor community aviary, planted flight area with a garden shed as a shelter/breeding area. My finches seem to all get along with the occasional teritorrial dispute, but never any blood shed.

I don't think my hubby had an idea of how addicted I would get to these little birds, nor the extra work it entailed for him. He does not do DIY and aviary building, but he keeps me happy and tried his damndest to give me the cage specs as I dictated them (me not being DIY either had no concept of what I was asking for). His first impression when it went up was... "you building a cage for monkeys?". I can understand the comment. My birds went from a crowded 2m x 0.9m x 1.8mHigh to a near 4m x 4m x 2mHigh. So I am thrilled with my aviary still (3yrs down the line) and one day when I own my own land to build on I will expand... until then I enjoy what I have and will be making improvements that I have been learning about since joining forums. Like the joy of black painted mesh! This is a new job for me to do when summer arrives.
