Hello All,

As a new finch enthusiast, I just can't wait to get started on completing the aviary and getting some birds in there:)!

I have a pair of stars and orange breasted wax bills on hold from a bird pet supplier at the moment.

I am also drawn to gouldians but informed that they are harder to rear. Have other finch owners found it particularly difficult to keep gouldians?

Also, ANY general advice on transporting and settling in new birds please? Whats sort of cage is best and do you need feed and water in the cage if traveling 30 minutes from supplier to home?

Welcome and happy birdkeeping!To answer your question on transport the birds should be fine for half hour or so, just keep them covered and away from direct sun.Make sure they can find their water and drinking when you get home.

Welcome to the forum. I concur with the previous comments, re location and short trips of 30 mins. Only thing I would add is do not release birds into a new avairy unless they have 3 - 4 hours of daylight in which to locate everything before darkness decends.

Welcome ...about the Gouldians ... they are no different to other finches axcept they do not have down feathers and will not suffer cold draughts having said that locally bred birds from outdoor aviaries should be acclimatised enough to thrive in your aviary provided you do a bit of wind proofing .

Welcome. If I can get a few Gouldians to fledge then anyone can. As mentioned, just protect from drafts and all should be sweet. Good luck with them.
