Just wondering, what do people use for transporting birds and/or quarantining them? I have seen the small wooden boxes, but not sure if they are suitable for transport or only for transferring birds between aviaries. Is a normal small bird cage (one of the little cheap ones) suitable for either purpose? would probably add side panels to stop wind. So much to learn!!!!!!!!!

the small wooden boxes, are the most common mode of transport for both purpose. less bothersome to carry around than a cage, and also convenient.
Travel Boxes are also occasionally used for temporary housing for sick birds, and the sides I find keep heat in. BUT then, I don't have a hospital cage.

For transporting birds from a sale or another breeder I use this type.
This is a double one I take to the sales, I do have a single one that lives permanently in the boot of my car just in case I find a bird I have to have. The double one has two openings, one to put the birds in that has the rubber on it, the other door is for releasing them into the aviary, no rubber on that one. I added velcro to both doors as it can get really crowded at the sales and I was concerned about the sliding doors getting moved accidentally.

The wire cage is one I got when I bought my first birds from the bird shop, then I found out they are frowned upon by the birding fraternity as it is too exposed. So I covered it with a handtowel and use it as a hospital cage. Its small size means its easy to heat (I use a reptile heat pad) quick to clean, less stress on an already stressed bird.
After hospital comes recuperation, I use a normal budgie cage with just a towel draped over the back.

Ive brought them home in proper bird boxes as seen above , in small budgie cages and on a couple of occasions when impulse buys have been made I have used the good old shoe box ...all have survived .

For moving birds around boxes like Dianes are good.If you have small finches 6mm square wire is better though.As young or small birds get there heads caught in the wire from time to time.Especially selling birds at sales it is a little embaracing,when someone says to you.Did you know one of your finches has its head stuck in the wire.

so for transporting, how many birds can go in a small wooden box? we are getting 2 pairs, one OB waxbill and one stars. would we need two boxes?

ones fine. always handy to have to as they can be used as temp hospital cages.you can buy them for about $15 from our local finch club or the avicultural society. if you buy the birds from a dealer they will have an appropriate carboard box for you save you money that way as it can be expensive buying one from a dealer....pete
