Well i only have two Java finch's, they have laid one egg, only one. is that normal or is that only something they do if there is no male, as i now know for sure i have a female, but if they are both female then im assuming they still lay eggs, just the egg dont hatch :(.

dose anyone have an opinion?... i would LOVE to hear it, as these two birds of mine are confusing me lol. :)

Never had Java's but if were any other finch I was having trouble sorting out the sex I would put a leg band on the one I know laid the egg and possibly even be putting her in a cage on her own, if I had the space.
Then close observation of the other one, it could be that separating them will make the questionable one either produce eggs or calls/whistling.

At least you are 50% of the way to getting it sorted out. :D

Don't know how many eggs mine laid cause the nest is above my head leval. Knew there was a catch in putting it there. But they only fledged 1 chick. Have you heard any singing that is a bit like a canary but not the same? My boy has a beatiful song. Or have you seen either of them dance, particularly with a piece of grass? They are supposed to though this guy has never let me see him do so. Diane's suggestion of different coloured rings and observation is the way to go.

Well before they laid the egg i seperated them for a few days, and i herd a tune ike song from one of them i never herd before, as if they were calling out to each other, so i assumed that the one out side was the male, so i placed a blue leg band on him, and a pink on the one inside as it never sung out like the other. anyways, about a day to two days later there's a egg in the budgie breeding box?.. i was pretty happy with them for it, but i wasnt sure if they only lay one or more, so i though maybe i had two girls and they layed a infertile egg. they dont seem to mind me havin a peek at it as they still go in and ly on it, BUT they both are in the nest at night????? whats has also amazed me is that i left them to be alone with the lonely egg and yesterday i was st curious and now there's 4 eggs lol :). so i must of just had a peek at the wrong time lol... im kinda just waiting for them to hatch to finally find out if i have a male and female, but then again i could have boy and girl and that eggs be infertile!.. so i looked up on a website how to tell fertile from infertile, so next week on tue/wed im gonna get my little LED torch and hold it above the eggs and if there red vains or a red colour threw it then they are fertile, so i have now go my heart set on doing that and praying they are fertile. :) <3

Another thing i been wanting to ask? dose anyone know of any QLD Finch associations or QLD java Society's ????? that i can join and do this breeding programe professionly.....well as a beginer :)

Cool thank you :).. i will check it out..

Another question for anyone?

at the start of this thread i only had one egg, then next time i check i had four, then the next day exactly, there was five. dose this mean i have two females that are just laying eggs, or do they always lay eggs at different dates when its a breeding pair?....

They can't lay all the eggs in one day, it would kill the female, plus the hen only has room for one egg - in - development per day

The Queensland Finch Society web site is http://www.qfs.org.au

Java's like all finches lay one egg per day, if you got five in 2/3 days then it sounds like you have 2 hens both laying, My wife bought 3 Javas and we have noticed 2 singing so we think we have got 2 Cocks & 1 Hen so have a spare Cock Bird if you need one.

I thought they could lay more in the one day but only one at a time... but thanks for letting me know :)

Today they have a total of 8 eggs!.., i used a torch to check if the ones from the first day which is now 10 days ago. but they dont have any red veins or any red colouring about them, just yellow see threw like :(... but some of these egg were layed a couple of days ago so i dont wanna get rid of them just incase one is fertile!..

Simba- if you do not want the spare cock bird, i would love to buy him, but how would he be freighted, as i live in Collinsville QLD 4804. its 2-3 hours from mackay or townsvile. the closes airports are Bowen or Proserpine. there are only 40mins-1.5hours away. i do know of Dog Tainers, they freight from door to door, air port to air port!. but are really expensive!. if you have any better ideas on how to do this, please let me know :)
