Even though this is my first breeding season, must be a fast learner as I've worked out already you can never sit back and think everything is going to go well now. My new young male Painted is busy making a nest and by this morning it looks almost finished and my OB male after carrying around grass and feathers and putting bits in 3 different nests for a couple of weeks finally finished one off today and is even sitting in it. Thought the female must be in there with him out of sight until I found her fluffed up and unable to fly on the floor of the aviary. Have brought her inside and put her in a hospital box and just hope if she's egg bound that she'll be OK by morning. Any suggestions anyone?

Constant even warmth is the best remedy for egg bound hens , a little oil around the vent but you have to gauge whether doing this will stress her out or not . A vet will do the warmth thing and watch for changes and in dire cases give antibiotics so what your doing is the best course of action .

Totally agree with jusdeb.The only thing I could add is darkness and quiet to reduce as much stress as possible.

Yep, heat, quiet and a bit of parafin oil on the vent and blow so it get sucked right up there, & a couple of drops on the bill, and rub just under the bill so it swallows, like rubbing the troath of a dog to swallow tablets. But make sure you do the bill first, wouldn't want the poor thing to get a nasty taste, the oil is bad enough.

Thanks everyone, the hot box is covered up so it's dark except for one corner just enough so she can see the food and water. Don't have an parafin oil, so can only do the warmth and dark. She's eating at the moment so looks a bit brighter. Just hope there's an egg in the morning.
