So this week has seen the O/Breast female put with the widowed male , stuck up boy is having nothing to do with her , luckily the ruddies are more sociable .
Just had a visit fro long time neophema show bird breeder and his wife bearing a gift of a little scarlet girl , he shows them and he thinks she is not show quality so gave her to me for my boy ( bloody nice fella ) scarlet boy is happy as Larry and is feeding her already ...so cute .
So as a breeder of course he checked out the other birds and gave me the thumbs up on my little set up but alas when we get to the rosy bourkes he asks " Are you sure they are male / female ? " Hmmmm well actully they have been sitting on 7 eggs for quite some time , and both of them are sitting ,my reply ....
So now I have 2 girls , not the pair I thought I purchased.
Now we start the merry hunt for a male or 2 , over it and just want every one paired off before spring hopefully

at least its not 2 cocks!! i had a diamond firetail die in a strange way a while ago so took it off to get autopsied just in case it may affect anyone else. filled in all the details at the vet, noting gender: male, due to deep black tail coverts and red (rather than orange for a hen) rump, but the first thing the vet noticed was that even though it looks like a cock (he agreed) it was in fact a hen

so, you are by no means the only one getting things wrong!!

have also been sold "pairs" by bird dealers that arent actually pairs: masked grassfinches, double bars and diamonds. luckily i have at least 6 of each of these species and things have all worked out in the end :D :D

Yep Spanna the confusion here is one is Rosy the other Rosy split , had me fooled but apparantly head shape and colour is that of girls ....anyhoo all other birds are male/ female pairs now Im sure about that unless one wants to be smart and go salamander on me and change sex
Gonna be a crap breeding season with having so many young replacement birds and those crazy Goulds that just lay eggs in every nest box and then dont sit on them.
Seems to be a roller coaster with these birds this year .

So dropped in to local pet shop to ask about selling one girl and getting a boy , all good will catch them up tomorrow and make things right ...poor Ian at Bobs Pets starts telling me about recessive genes and vaguely remember the word creme , rosa , hen then my eyes must have glazed over and it was all blah blah blah .
In sure by end of tomorrow he will have it sorted ...good bloke.
