I 'm not at the stage of buying birds just yet still organizing the avairy etc, but as part of the whole have been
around the different larger bird dealers looking at finches and prices. Their current prices are way above those listed
on the forum as at 06/09.I appreciate that these are last years prices and that dealers must make a profit but some of the
prices are almost 100% higher.Have things increased so much in 15 months?
Cheers Greg.

I think the prices are based on breeder to breeder rather than the dealers or shops. So that would account for some of the difference in price.

I agree. I bought a pair of Long Tails for $70 in a pet shop, could have waited a week and gotten them or $20 at a bird sale. I didn't know that though. And also, that's another rise in price. where can you find $20 red billed longtails these days???

Prices from Pet shops and Dealers to a lesser degree are generally far higher than buying from a breeder.
I shake my head at some of the prices retailers ask for birds and actually sell them.
Dealers will buy at bird sales and in many cases the same price a keeper would pay. They then have to margin it and generally retail on any relatively small
dollar item is 80% to 100%
I sold Cordons this year for $65 p/p( and happy with that) yet at a recent sale they were selling at $80 to $100 per pair and $75 for a female.
It all depends where you live I guess or how desperate you are to aquire a single bird or pair

cool, hopefully will meet you properly then

Usually a few there, you should have some luck.
I am on the Canberra Finch Club Committee, so if anyone has questions about the sale, please PM me.

when you find good birds and you can afford the asking price just buy them . i generally buy from breeders however last year purchased a black throat hen and a star hen from a local pet shop at what i knew to be high prices . i bought the birds based on their quality and they didn,t disappoint with both being prolific breeders .

It tends to be a case of finding out who has the finches you want. If you can source through the forum here you will get quality birds at reasonable prices, from my experience in doing just that. If you can't, try the Quokka and the dealers. Quality and price will vary, from excellent to dodgy. Buy those whose quality meets your requirements and decline those that don't.
