A nice surprise!

I came home from 5 days out at work to find that 3 pairs of my Gouldians have gone to nest. 2 boxes have 5 eggs and the other has 6. They appear to be fertile at the moment. Waiting for my candler to arrive to confirm, but think I will be leaving them to do their thing. Crossing finger for 16 babies in 8 days time!

That's a flasher version of what Mum uses. Just a torch with a long thin end that you can put right next to the egg and see if it is dark or clear. But don;t be in too big a hurry to chuck them. Always allow a couple of extra days and do a re check before you chuck.

The candler has a very flexible neck which can be bent in all directions. The button to switch it on is on the handle end. I just bend the neck to whatever angle gives the best light into the egg. Dont need to touch the egg.
I carry it by bending the neck around my neck, keeps the hands free to open and shut doors, check seed and water while in the aviary.

Ok so...One nest looks like it was abandoned when the chicks just hatched..not sure why. Unfortunately they were already gone. One nest still has 5 eggs being icubated not sure if they are fertile yet as the cock is sitting strong but my other nest has 7 chicks!! Looking goo so far with foo intheir crops. Judging by their soze looks like hatching took place over 3 days. Sooo cute!!
