hi will. yes double bars will build nest if two hens. i had them a while back and they built a nest and laid about 10 to 12 eggs in the nest and never hatched , so i figured both hens s o i procceeded to get two males and hey presto heaps of babies. but as for the diamonds boys will build a nest no problems but i have 5 hens ( through dna testing) that dont build but share old nests and keep laying eggs in them. so i guess they willl....pete

Thanks Pete, I think I have two male that have built a nest but no eggs. I can see one male carrying a piece of grass then the other one will take it and do the same thing. :? They are fighting a fair bit now also.
How do you get DNA testing and where? Dose it cost alot?

I use dnasolutions is a little dearer then mds.But i pay the extra $2 because they are An Australian company and provide a very good service. If you decide to dna it is easy to do.generally i only dna birds over $100 a pair if needed.

as gomer said i wouldnt do it for birds under 100 a pair. your best bet with owls or as we call them over here double bars is to have more than one pair and tag them with a differnt leg ring and watch to see how they go , so once you see some pairings you can record the findings and move them to another cage to breed . sounds like a bit much to do but that way u know u have a pair......pete

Yeh I agree.
The diamonds I'm 90% sure one is male. He is always carrying around a piece of grass & dancing. Also has turn a bit aggressive towards the other. They built a huge nest and both roost in it at night. Anyone had similar thing happen?
Will try and get a photo of the two.
