First Emblema babies

Have finally had some luck with my Emblema pair with their firs 2 chicks fledging a week ago thanks to Spanna's great little hen. She's already sitting again so things are looking much more promising and both chicks looking good. One came out of the nest with a hint of red down his chest. Is this normal?

Red feathers already, thats great.
I have a clutch that hatched 11th November and they have just enough red on them to start telling who is what, but none of them fledged with red feathers.
Birds that colour up quick are well worth keeping, if it were mine it wouldnt be going anywhere.

Congratulations. The little lad I got from Spanna has settled down with his mate also, but not nesting. So you have the jump on me. Spanna sure breeds good uns. And I 2nd or is it 3rd that/those comments about hanging on to such an early colouring finch. Could be going to be very red.

glad to hear my hen's doing well for you!! lots of my young fledge with red on the chest now. just a sign of how deeply coloured they will be, and an early indicator towards gender i think, with males having the red splashes, hens not (or very little). have been meaning to ring some young differently after fledging to test this but just rearranged some painteds with new partners to get more red so no fledglings at the moment... nest being built already though! hope you have some luck soon finchbreeder :)

Thanks everyone and will ring them both and see if it is an indicator of gender. Sounds like 3 cheers from everyone else as well Spanna

Ok Spanna I know I am going to regret asking, but what finches do you have for sale ATM that would go well in a mixed aviary with OB, yellow stars and DB? We have thrown in a couple of gouldians temporarilty but will eventually ,put them back in the gouldian aviary. Oh and we are very new at this so they have to be idiot proof!
