Here I am thinking that if you breed red-head Gouldians you can only get red-heads. Well I got a black head hen. Explain that one!

I think I just worked it out. The red-heads are split for black head. I didn't think a red head could be split for black but it's the other way around. A black head cannot be split for red as red is dominant.

Your cock bird is red split black, same thing happaned to me aviary with rh goulds breeding, and during the molt 1 pair gave me some black head hens.

A pair of red heads can possibly create all three head colours. Yellow heads can produce either yellow or black. Black heads are the only pairing where the only possible outcome is black.
