What type of quail would be big enough to provide decent sized eggs for human / bird consumption ? I dont want to keep chooks so am thinking about quails ...
How many ? what type ? food needs etc.

Jap are the most economical but a bit flighty.Bob white bit dearer nicer to look at, Californian dearer again but is a market for fertile eggs. They all have a laying season wont lay all year round. None are suitable for bottom of aviary will eat fledged young. There's also Chucker partridge.

Now thinking if we need to be building housing I might be better of with a couple of the smaller types of chooks .

Is all good Flab , your post got me thinking again about growing my own eggs....

So Buzz when you say freish you mean that morning's right? so this batch is no go then, we are on egg number 5 and two of those days were absolute heatwaves. Does the same apply when feeding them to the birds (I assume it does). And does it take less to cook them than a chicken egg? (all this questions!!!! :silent: )

2 days should be ok if not sure break into a container first. Cook by volume ie if it takes 5 mins for a chook egg and a quail egg is say 1 fifth the size it should take 1 min but trial and error would decide for sure.
