For those who use yearly coloured leg rings purple is the colour for 2011.So chapmans have told me.I changed to their aluminium split numbered coloured rings 6 months ago as a trial. And now will use them.A tip I found it easy to open them up with a nail punch,As that opens them up evenly.

I have been buying my last lot from a guy in Sydney, 400 for about $20 they are a soft plastic/rubber type and cut them in half to get 2 out off them they are that long. In the end they are about 2mm long or so.
Not going to worry with aluminium rings for the Gouldians this being the first year with them, just see how they go and just put my plastic ones on.

I have been putting the plastic rings on our young birds, the smallest I can get and they still manage to slip them off. Would the
ali type be better and any tips on how to use them, is there any chance of pinching the birds leg?
Cheers Greg.

Have been using the soft plastic ones up until now.....over xmas with visitors and going away I overlooked a leg ring that had slipped down over the yellow emblemas foot , the foot had swollen and I dont think blood was getting around the foot .
Anyhoo since fixing the ring he is using his foot again but one toe looks dead , just waiting for a full recovery then the plastic ring comes of .

I have had a couple slip,As the plastic ones. But I use the one size for all,Where it could be better using the two finch sizes,Also the ones that slipped were put on 5 week fledged birds.bushranger wrote:I have been putting the plastic rings on our young birds, the smallest I can get and they still manage to slip them off. I dont think Ali ones would be any better for most people,I in large each individually with a nail punch, time consuming. Then squeeze them on with my fingers.I am going to get a ring applicator. If you stuff one up I have a leg ring remover for that.Which I will say is excellent.
So plastic ones may suit most as they are easier to use,But dont have as much info for a single ring system.

Great info on leg rings. I am a novice when it comes to leg rings. I plan to buy some aluminium ones, for me it doesn't matter what colour they are as I only intend to ring my breeding pairs, as to differentiate them from their offspring. Therefore I can sell the offspring and not my breeding pairs.
