Visually the throat bib of the cock bird is larger than that of the hen.
When looking at the top of the head, the grey of the cock bird appears to be cleaner than that of the hen.
The beak of the male is also said to be slightly larger than that of the hen.
Putting the birds into a smaller cage where they cannot see each other, but can hear will encourage a male to sing.
