Silly question but how do you sex Zebras?

not silly, the only silly question is the one that never gets asked :D

In almost all zebra mutations, the cock wil have a combination or all of:

a chestnut flanked area spotted with white
an orange cheek patch
black barring down the throat

Hens will usually have:
no cheek patch
no chestnut flanks
no black barring

In normals, (2nd from the bottom), that is a male.

In almost all male zebs you can see a cheek patch of some colour.

The exceptions to the above rule (that I know of) are Pieds, where white blotching can cover all/any male markings, white where they look exactly the same and black cheeked, where the hen has cheek patches as well. But the males are still easy to distinguish because of their other traits.

if you're still not sure, go by the beak. the males will be bright red, hens orange/light red.

hope that helps :)

Male has orange cheak patches, black bars on chest and chestnut with white dots on side
Hen doesn't!
Pure white ones can be a problem, Go by behavior and darker red beak on male.

Oh cool thanks! We keep finches at my work, and my Manager has explained to me a few times how to sex the few varieties but unfortunately I'm notoriously forgetful, and with all the different varieties/names of the finches it makes it extra hard haha :hi:

I wasnt going to put them on even tho they were on the sheet i have. Garry i think i would let the Victoria members know first then you can be second in line. Deal? I will let you know once the young colour up if i have Black Cheeks.
