Hello All,
We are looking at possibly getting a pair of double bar finches and wondered whether the supplier will be accurate at sexing them, as we heard and read it can be quite difficult to work out. Any opinion or ideas on best technique at identifying the male and female of this group please? Also, have you got any thoughts about the black rump variety in comparison to the white rump and many thanks in advance for your response folks.
Cheers,

Old mate I got mine from can sex them but still recommends getting at least 3 pair , they are very social birds and thrive when there is more than 1 pair in a aviary and also because they are so hard to sex having six birds will guarantee that you at least get one pair ....I was lucky or breeder was good at his job coz out of 6 birds I got 3 breeding pair.

The whiteness of the breast between the bars is supposed to be the way to sex them. The whiter the more likely to be male, the creamer the more likely to be female. Sometimes the difference is obvious sometimes it is not. EG the creamest cock and whitest hen will be the same colour. Best in flocks, but it depends what is available and how much space you have. I have (according to the supplier and me) 1 pair in a mixed avairy. Fingers crossed by this time next year I will have fledglings to prove it.

Yep thats how old mate tells them apart here garymc ...just looked at my 6 ( not that they sat still long enough ) and there are differences although very slight and if I go on body colour then I have all same sex birds.
Mine have paired off so that to me is the best way to tell.
