Bird Sales

I haven't sold any birds at a bird sale before, but I've been breeding enough numbers recently, that I think it might be worth my while. As far as I'm aware, there are only 2 sales close to me. Fairfield and Castle Hill. Are either of these sales worth attending if you are selling finches? Am I better off taking all my birds to one of the bigger sales like Orange or Gunnedah? To make it worth my while, I would want to sell a good portion of the birds taken. The species I would be selling are tri-colours, sea greens, st helenas, black headed nuns, gouldian mutations. If I was to take a total of around 30 prs, how many could I expect to sell?

With your location, have you tried posting on petlink,
http://www.petlink.com.au, only down fall is people coming to your house, (There are undesirables out there) or do as I do and arrange to meet them close by without disclosing your home address. I can't comment on SYD sales but I sell at Gunnedah every year with 100% or close to sold every time.

Yeah I've advertised a few times on petlink and sold a few but for your ad to be noticed, you really have to post a couple of times a day for consecutive days, which I just don't have the time for. If I could take all my younguns and sell them all at one sale, I'd be happy with that.

Matt,
I have only experienced the country sales Orange and Gunnedah and i believe either would be worthwhile.most finch sellers clear 100% before end of sale.the only exceptions i have noted were the odd single bird(usually cockbirds),over-priced lots or those species that every seller has.
tricolours, blackheaded nuns etc will walk out the door, gouldians and saints too if priced reasonably.
Birds in good condition will find new owners quickly so present them well and the rest will follow.
hope to see you there.

We go to Orange Sale every year,in our opinion it is a far better finch sale if not total sale than Gunadah.
The people running it look after the sellers very well, far better than others.
As for selling your finches,I can only go by experience and we have taken very very few home. Generally all good quality birds are sold within the hour
Should you have others to sell, then keep Jayburd happy and go to Canberra the following weekend.
I must admit that we use both sales as an excuse to get away and stay in the places the night before.
We bench our birds in Orange the night before and then the rest of the time we can enjoy the towns facilities.
We are already booked in at the Orange Services Club's Motel.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I'll have to get off my lazy butt and make some sale cages then. Don't think I'll make it in time for this years Orange sale, but will definately be there in future years. Might at least go for a stickybeak this year.

I've been to a few sales including Gunnedah, Orange, Nowra, Fairfield, Yass (yes they have a sale, no it's not worth attending), Canberra and queanbeyan.
If I only get to one sale this year it will be Orange. Was impressed with that the most. Have never sold at any though. Will probably be at Nowra and seeing as how I'll be in Canberra on the 13th I may stick my head in there too.
