Really happy about having babies this early. Now I know they will colour up by November. Anyone else having early luck with their Gouldians?

Well, I had some success 3 weeks ago but the heat and ants put paid to that but on the other hand am handraising the sole survivor (yellow) and it is presently at the weaning stage. I have at least 2 pairs sitting on eggs and expect chicks this weekend. Good luck with your breeding, hope you do well. There is nothing sweeter than the sound of chicks in the nest!

Well done cranberry  I have a nest with 6 chicks about a week old and another pair sitting on 8 eggs which is due to hatch in a few days. I too am pleased to be getting good results early on as the winter here can be pretty harsh for breeding conditions.

Yeah it's not my Yellowbacks Diane, just the normal red-heads. There are now 5 babes in that nest and I'm sure another nest has young too but I haven't checked yet. Oh and my canaries have eggs...again...

I looked in the nest box where the only remaining sitting birds whosw nest survived my snake episode a fornight ago and found a hatchling but I can see it's a Hecks in the Gouldian's nest 'cause I couldn't quite stand to throw all the eggs out when some were so close to hatching. I sort of regret not having the guts to just chuck them as I'm certain the Goulds won't feed them.

This is my first year breeding finches. Must be beginers luck. I have 19 young that have left the nest and another 2 nests with babies from my six pairs. Theyre a lot more productive than colored canaries!!!

Hi Cranberry. Congrats on your "early" Gouldians. Things must be different on the other side of the Tasman as many Gouldian breeders here in NZ would have had young on the perch by September/October. I have been doing cage breeding ever since .....( wel, forget about Adam :) ) I bred them at various times of the year, depending on what other species I had in my breeding room and my level of boredom. Maybe someone on the forum can explain to me how things work in Oz. Obviously different and I am keen to learn.
I enclose a pic of part of my breeding room. cheers, Case
