Dad rang me up yesterday and said he got his hands on a pair of purple grenadiers, I said nice one. He then told me "well didnt get a pair but got a male".
I went around this afternoon to have a look and sure enough he had a male in the cabinet. Sorry for poor photos, mobile camera and in a cabinet with a moving bird its hard to get a good photo.
If anyone knows somebody with a spare female let me know.
A new fellow to the collection

haha my dad is a pretty good bloke, very honest and reliable. He is one of those blokes from the good ol days who always tries to help another breeder/keeper out if he can.
Yeah they are a big finch, there was some Gouldians in the cage above and it almost looked double the size. I think the long tails they have make them look larger too.
He said he is going to put it in with the larger birds. So hopefully it should go alright. I have also heard they are aggressive but usually towards there own kind.

They are not very agro at all.
Comments like that often originate from people who have never seen the actual specie let alone kept them.
Sadly a few years ago some male Grenadier W/B's were put to Cordon hens which didn't go down to well.
While there are a few around the chances of picking up a spare hen will be very hard indeed but I really hope he succeeds.
Both the Violet Ear and Grenadier W/Bills are great looking species.
Actually I think the Violet Ear stands out in an aviary more than our own Gouldian and thats quite a staement.

Jealous!! Have always admired these birds. This and the Violet Eared Waxbill. Out of my price range and experience right now though
