Latin Name:
Munia (Lonchura) maja Linnaeus

Other Names:
Silver Headed Nun, White Headed Munia, White Headed Mannikin, Pale Headed Mannikin

Mutations:
None Known

Description:
Adult - The head is white, back and wings are glossy brown. The beak is a silver blue colour.
Juveniles – Juveniles are a lighter shade of brown and appear to be duller in colour.

Sexing:
Monomorphic.
The male may have a larger area of white/silver colouring than the hen, but as with other species of finch if you have a well marked hen and a poorly marked cock bird you just won’t know which is which. The beak of the cock is also said to be larger than that of the hen.
Some people say that the males colouring is brighter than the hens, haven’t noticed this in my birds though. I get mine DNA sexed.

Basic Breeding Info:
Average Clutch Size: 3 to 6 eggs
Incubation Period: 12 to 14 days
Leave nest: 20 to 22 days

Do not house these birds with other members of the nun group (Tri-Coloured, Black headed) as they could cross breed.

Approximate cost per pair in Australia:

Queensland: $60
New South Wales: $60
Victoria: $75
Tasmania: ?
South Australia: $80
Western Australia: $60
