Hi all, I know that you should change you water everyday for the bird's , I have a couple of water drinkers in my aviary.
But I don't get a chance to change the water everyday and it ends up going green , is there anything i can do to stop it
from going green ???

Chlorhexadine gluconate. Avicleans or other brands or Microshield 5 from the chemist, dilute 200ml make upto 1ltr of water, then add 5ml/10ltrs drinking water.

Placing the drinkers away from direct sunlight will help, but you really should be changing the water regularly.

Matt is right. Away from direct sunlight makes the world of difference. BUT, how often do you change the water and clean the containers than? This should not go green over 2/3 days. Adding anything to the drinking water is not an option for me and many others. cheers, case

The old terracotta bird bath I used in the big aviary would go off very quickly , I think once the terracotta pores become infected with algae spores it wont take much sunlight to send it green .
Out of the aviary now and it has gone green very quickly ( full sun ) . It has since been replaced with a glazed one and the water is always clean ( daily flushouts if low 30s more often in higher temps).
If it come to a choice of dirty water or using an additive I know I would use the additive . Touch wood no problems here at the moment.
