  I love pictorellas. I had a pair at one stage, but the hen did within a few days and I never was able to procure another one. the cock stayed with me until the middle of last year, when I gave it to a friend. It has since died, I think.

Well done Gomer, Can you share with us what live food you fed out to your birds or were they bred without it. I have a breeder near me who uses only white ants and has a lot of success with the pics.

I have only been feeding maggots to my finches for about 18 months.Maybe that had something to do with them breeding. Also i got in some new blood in that time. They only get mealworms very occasionally as well.

Haven't had any since they were legally trapped so that's how old I am. Beautiful bird and very interesting taxonomy if it's a munia.

I think gomers birds are all in outside aviaries. He has a great setup, some pics are on the forum, also they were featured in the May 2010 issue of the newsletter

I don't know if you can get in in the UK, but the newest Aviary Life has a very interesting article on pictorellas.
actually, I think they just made an E-magazine so maybe you can sign up and read it?

They are in open flights. And they nest in tussock grass (poa's) on or near the ground.I think the maggots may have had the biggest impact on them,As I have only been feeding them out for less then two years.
