Was thinking about building an insect trap - PVC pipe, exhaust fan, UV light sort of a thing. Then I spotted this thing on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MEGA-Mosquito-In ... 256101e2db
I wonder will it do the trick? It says it dehydrates and kills the insects, but I suspect they'd survive till the morning feed. Or maybe I can remove the container and have it blow the insects straight into the aviary?
Has anyone used one these gadgets?

A bug zapper electrocutes them dead.
A bug trap has the same type light to attract the moths but the fan actually sucks them into a netting bag.
Next morning the fan has kept them in the bag alive ready to be fed out. Big difference.

E Orix - the eBay link is NOT a bug zapper, it's a light and fan with a container underneath. Have another look - scroll down and read the details - they included the word "zapper" in the title to attract more hits. This thing only kills them over time due to dehydration.

I have been using these for over 12 months. The bugs are still very active in the morning so no problems there.
However the units do not attract moths as well as my older style units. I think the light is less obvious or something.
A real plus though is they are easy to use and empty etc. I got my units from Bunnings hardware.

I read bug zapper and stopped.
I now agree that it will catch bugs but I would be concerned about its capacity.
Moths make up 90% of my catch and a reasonable summer catch should half fill a plastic bucket, don't try to prove this unless you are already inside an aviary.
I occasionally catch a Sparrow, how they get through the fan blades unhurt amazes me. They look so forlorn when you see them in the mesh bag, I guess they have had a good feed though and they fly away ok when released.
My Moth trap works on a circular black fluo tube possibly 350mm in diam and a 300mm kitchen exhaust fan behind it.
It doesn't matter what you use provided it produces the goods.

Good part is if it doesn't suit your purposes at least you have a bug zapper for the front or back verandah .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

E Orix - your trap is what I was going to build. I suspect the parts would be more expensive than the $70 for the eBay one.
Hopefully it will arrive today - will let you all know how it goes...
Hopefully your proof will also hold true for the eBay one! If not I'll build one like you describe.E Orix wrote:Moths make up 90% of my catch and a reasonable summer catch should half fill a plastic bucket, don't try to prove this unless you are already inside an aviary.
Too true, so not a waste regardless of the outcome.jusdeb wrote:Good part is if it doesn't suit your purposes at least you have a bug zapper for the front or back verandah .
