which parrot finch should I choose?
I don't like Blue Faces, and I do love my red faces which I have had before... but now mother's lusting after tri colours and I have to say i see her point they're beautiful!
so what do i choose? by the way, Red Faces are about $70 these days aren't they?

Jayburd. In your profile you list your interest as Non - Mutation finches, Blue mutation gouldians. Is a Gouldian not a finch than? Apart from that I would go for the Forbes. They have come down in price quite a bit and are a beautiful bird. Similar in nature to the other parrot finches you refered to. Good luck with your choise. cheers, case.

You know you love blue Jayburd so it has to be tri-colours. They are a great little bird, one of my favourites.

just so you guys know, I have very little actual breeding experience, mostly just pairs that have abandoned due to overcrowding and lack of live food, before I knew any better. So I'm starting afresh :)

Jayburd, I would consider Tri-colours no more difficult than either blue or red faced to breed. In fact, as far as live food goes, they would require less than the others. Be happy to help you out with a cheap young pair when you're ready.

thank you!!! that would be great!! :D :D! you're a bit far away though...
I heard from another forum member who PM'd me, he said that his tri colours just got fat and lazy. they did breed but not satisfactorily. How can I prevent this?

My Tri's breed quite happily without any form of livefood so that aint an issue.

Just beware they leave their chicks - don't sit on them at night - at around 8 days (like Red siskins) so this may cost you a nest or 3 if you're not careful. Simple to remedy it with a cheap oil-filled column heater placed on low heat on a timer or such near the nest.
There will always be some that do sit through but they may do it one nest them leave the next one so why take the risk??
Many use these even in the Hunter Valley.....forewarned is forearmed.
