Hi all I am sad, sick in the stomach and fell helpless after my very first clutch of 4 goldfinches birds have been abandoned after day three.I feel so stupid aswell as I think it is my fault for doing to many nest inspections.I left the light on at the back of my house,as I went to shut it when I see the hen out of the nest and being aggresive with the cock :problem: .It was getting late and hen never looked settled or went back to feed or sit.24 hours later chicks are still alive, remarkable but no good news as no feeding or interest shown I guess I will find all four dead in the morning. It is a lesson learned believe me.Now I know what some of you guys go through and that it doesn't always go to plan.

It's a bugga but it comes with the territory and experience will tell you whichbirds tolerate nest inspections. If you've got some canaries with similar aged young you could try fostering. I've been able to raise soft-bills but never a finch so I can't offer any advice on artifical rearing.

Thats very sad . Sometimes we have to learn the hard way but dont be too hard on yourself there may have been other reasons for them abandoning the clutch .

Just to be on the safe side though leave them be in future ...Im sure you already have decided this .

Bird keeping can be heartbreaking at times .

Thats a shame. Have you thought about just topping them up with maybe one feed a day? Maybe the parents would get sick of hearing them call and start feeding again.
