A landscaper mate called me today from a job in Vaucluse (which for those of you who don't know is one of the most exclusive eastern suburbs of Sydney). Tells me he's found a baby bird on the road which he thinks is a kingfisher and doesn't know what to do with it. He then sent me the pictures below. Stunning.

Not much to say really. Who would have thought this would pop up in a densely populated, manicured suburb of Sydney?
Byt the way, he released it into some nearby heath woodland. Had to laugh when he said it wasn't keen on staying in a tree and kept running along the ground....

Very cool. Would never have thought they'd be in suburbia.

Fine by me JB. Will be fascinated to see what the Vaucluse residents do when a bunch of twitchers descend on them. Could be very amusing.

Hey T, being a softbill nut myself the temptation was great, but the head prevailed. The thought of explaining this as a mutation pekin robin or the unusual progeny of a pair of splendid wrens was not particularly appealing.....
Does anyone actually keep them?

Harry has bred 2 or 3 clutches this year each having 4 young. Most ended up in zoos or with other aviculturalists.

Not the first sighting for suburban Sydney, i know of one that turned a couple of years ago. Apparently they are migrating south (i think there is a population near Wollongong) at this time of year.
