In the aviary this morning and the weavers are just starting their winter moult. The tell tale sign of small orange yellow feathers in the water dish. The cock birds bright colours are fading fast and looking scruffy. Would like to know when Grenadiers start moulting in other areas of Australia.

Here at the big walk in aviary I don't think they ever change!! I have never been there without at least some coloured cocks, and I have been there at all times throughout the year.

I wonder if the aviary size has an impact why they are not changing out of their nuptial plumage or if its due to old age?

What difference a couple of days makes. A couple of my cock birds have now lost half their feathers. Over night temps are around 9-12 degrees with max day time low 20s, winter is fast approaching.

slightly off topic but i have a strawberry finch who has never moulted out of his breeding colours. though my other cycles normally.
i suspect he's quite old. so age may have something to do with it.
