Hi I'm soon to be new to blue gouldians:-p . I have had gouldians for four years now and am just wondering what other people do to make the blue mutation stronger with bigger healthy birds?

normally people breed them to splits or one of them is a split to blue and the other is blue, i dont know much about them because i dont breed them but im sure people that do would know more than i do on the forum

Try to locate breeders that reside near your area and discuss with them thier experiences with keeping blues and if possible visit them. Only purchase parent rared blues, trust me this will save you a lot of heartache down the track.

Tigerfan,
Don't want to sound like a harbinger of doom, but I have read another post of yours in regrads to ivormectin. You say that you haven't used it before and have never treated for ASM lice etc. If this is the case, honestly, blues arn't for you.

Can I just ask this question ? Generally ....
Why do breeders want bigger birds ? Might post it as a topic actually just to see what people think .

I have always wondered that too Deb. Particularly as generally speaking I like smaller birds. Think there is a mistaken impression out there that bigger is better. When really good things frequently come in small packages.

Breeders take on the blue mutation knowing the possible losses and consider themselves to be able to handle it. Even armed with the knowledge that others have gone through and continue to go through the same thing. I'm here to say that its hard, very hard.

Ok then well I think if people continue to breed splits and as time goes on I think the blue mutation will get stronger and stronger.
