Bird shows can be a great place to pick up new birds but sadly it can also be a great place to unload problem birds .
Ask the age of the bird ?
Are they related ?
Have they bred before ?
Compare the prices with whats around but if the birds look exceptionally nice then expect to pay for quality .
Don't impulse buy ( easier said than done ) .
Get there early .
Load the kids with a mobile phone coz your bound to lose at least one of them .
Take your own carry box .
Take cash ( silly I know but a friend of mine was very upset they they didn't have eftpos at Orange show

)
And most of all have fun . Lots to see .
When buying a bird you want good colour , clear eyes and vent , feet not missing any bits , active and alert in a clean cage .
Myself prefer to but from breeders but love the excitement of a bird show.

All of Debs post and dont forget to pad up!
When those doors open its like a contact sport with people using the carry boxes like battering rams!

Hey there, am only a relative newbie but thought I would add my comments :
Once I had decided to get some finches but did not know what sort, I visited a number of pet shops in my area and "just browsed". Not only looked at the finches but all birds in the shops. Quickly walked away from those establishments who had a variety of not nice looking birds eg: dull eyes, fluffed up feathers, sitting in corners plus unclean messy vents. Some of these shops also had a very unclean look to them. Found a couple of places whose birds appeared healthy and the staff were helpful and knowledgable.
Then spent god knows how long choosing my birds (the other half says hours, I think it was minutes though LOL).
Ended up with very healthy birds who have been successful this year in breeding and raising healthy young.
I found taking your time, browsing and learning and taking some more time was best. Oh and like buying a car, if its too good a price, there may be a bad surprise in store.
