Is it worth while breeding Gouldians through winter.
Some people dont advise it as the babies wont handle the cold???
Some people say you can.???
I am going to buy a pair from a show/sale tomorrow can i put them straight into the cabinet...
My plan is to breed them in an outside cabinet but it will be protected

I live in newcastle so its not to cold, gets down two 8deg

Thanks
Brett

You can if you want, my brothers gouldians only bred in winter and we live in Melbourne. There are some risks such as eggbinding and higher fledgling death rate.

Yes egg binding in young hens can be a worry but by keeping the wind out and keeping up the calcium / D3 you will have a better chance .
I would be having a hospital box ready as a" just in case", if your going to attempt breeding in Winter .
As said some do it and some dont so have a go if that's what you want and good luck with it , nothing ventured nothing gained .

As jusdeb said d3 a more d3 has saved and eliminated egg binding for me. Get heaps bigger clutches also!

Once you have 5 approved posts the Calendar with upcoming sales will be accessible to you + the classified area and other area's as well

Hi Brett, I wouldn't be pairing up Gouldians to start breeding in Winter...in Melbourne breeding will stop by July for me. I personally wouldn't be buying any Gouldians at this time either...strong healthy birds should be in breeding avairies/cabinets breeding...so why would anyone be selling them at this stage...so I personally wait until when they have completed their moult (Nov/Dec) before buying any Gouldians...cheers, Paul

oh ok thanks, havent heard of it.had an eggbound hen the other night she finaly passed the egg after I went up and got her vegtable oil and put on her beak and bott..not fun for either of us so I will look for that D3  .I was franticaly reading web solutions to try and save her after the vet said she could not be helped by him ..at least he didnt charge me ...and I felt so bad as it kept indicating malnutrition is the cause  .I thought sand, grit and cuttlebone were enough !!!
