Eye Trauma

Hi folks,
I have a young gouldian, i noticed this morning it was having trouble with its eye. On closer inspection it looked like it may have caught its eye on something. Any ideas on how to treat it. I realise that if the eye is damaged there won't be much i can do, but it there something i can put on it to stop infection that won't irritate the eye more.
Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian,
I'd wash it with warm water or sterile saline eye wash if anyone in your family wears contact lenses.
If you can get your hands on some antibiotic eye ointment that would help. Most require vet prescription, but the local chemist may have something that may help. There used to be a product called Golden Eye Ointment, for example.
If you do manage to get a veterinary ointment try to make sure it doesn't contain any cortisone, especially if there is any chance that the surface of the eye is damaged.
Otherwise, just keep flushing it with warm saline eye wash 3-4 times daily.
Hope this helps.

Saline water can be bought at a chemist in little sachets about $2 -$3 if you don't have it on hand. Not sure if that's the same stuff as Myzo was meaning though.

I think you can still get the Golden Eye Ointment, the other one I use is Layticin (spelling), but have a funny feeling that it requires a script.

Both chemists I went to said that golden eye ointment was unavailable. I managed to get a chloramphenicol based product.

I have used Terramycin Pinkeye Powder in the past,it is a broad spectrum antibiotic .It has worked for me with a parrot finch that had a sore eye.
