very small aviary ...how to stock ?

Ive got a 3 bay aviary underway . Each bay is 2.4 long and 1.2 wide , fully roofed .

Im going to be putting 1 pair of Purple Crowned Lorikeets in one of the bays , from my googling all sites say they are great with finches so Im thinking of either Blue Faced Parrotfinches or Red Brows ( prefer red brows ) .

Questions are .

Are the sites correct ?
How many pairs of finches would comfortably live with the PCrowns ?
Is food going to be an issue ie. will the finches hoe into the nectar and thus become fatties ?

OR

Is this a bad idea ?

I can only have the one bay as the other 2 are needed to grow out youngins for future breeding .

Thanx.

Purple Crowned may be fine Jusdeb but i wouldnt be trying it in small aviareis.I`ve always taken it to mean they are fine with finches but in aviaries 4m plus.Im not sure but personally i would like to see the finches with plenty of room to get out of the way if need be.

Yeah agreed .

I have the option of putting the PCs into a suspended by themselves which leaves a small aviary .

More thought needs to go into this one I think.

Deb,
I have 3 flights, 90wx180lx180h. They are interconnected. Currently use 2 of them for breeding, 5prs goulds, 2 prs painteds and 2 prs stars. Can get overcrowded because of fledglings, but ship them into the holding cage(3rd flight) when thery are weaned. The painteds seem to use the lower part of the cage and the stars are in the middle., so so far don't have many probs. When breeding season is finished I will remove all nesting boxes/cane baskets and then open all three to become one. Will then sell off and select breeding stock for next year. Works for me.

Hope this helps.

I had PC's in with softbills & finches, cock got a little agro round the nest when breeding, but was fine apart from that. Also had Varieds in with both & no trouble, & 2 Pr of Littles, one pr were saints, the othe pair played soccer with the Fruit-Pigeons eggs & ripped the Wrens nest apart. Funny thing is that they were father & son, son was the saint & the father the sinner, go figure. So it really comes down to the individual temprement of the bird. Give it a go, & if any hassels, whip them out & into the suspended.

Another good point , individual birds temperament .

Matcho I think if you are doing it successfully then it should work here too , smaller flock and slightly larger aviary .

Im thinking the PCs and 1 pair Blue Face PFs ... for now :D
