Young fella wants to breed Goulds in 2 cabinets,me thinking he should start with canaries.
We have 2 pair of canaries in our avairy

Should he start with Canaries..??
Are canaries easier to breed than Gouldians.???

As we are very new to the finch/canary world i need opinions please

Canaries are more suited to cabinet life than Gouldians, although they still need to fly in the off season.

Brett I'm sure with your guidance he will successfully breed either of the birds with out too much hassle .

I cant remember if you had the 2 cabinets ready to go , if so maybe let him go with a pair of each .

I think its great that he wants to get involved .

While I prefer Gouldians than Canaries(I think) My opinion would be to go with the Canaries.
Apart from being fully domesticated and will breed well in a cage they have the major advantage of building their cup shaped nests.
Your son will be able to watch the whole process without the need to interfere by opening boxes etc.From nest to egg to hatchling to fledging.
All there and not hidden.
As a learning process Canaries are very good.

We will buy a breeding pair of Gouldians around late August,when it warms up a bit..

HI Brett Canaries don’t start breeding till spring at this time of year they will more than likely sit there and do nothing . Pair them up in September and they may go strait to nest. Breeding Gouldian's this time of year would require heated nest boxes so the young don’t freeze when the parents stop brooding when the young are about 10 days old .

Canary breeding season starts around late august- funny saying this as I have a hen sitting now, while gouldiasn tend to like august through to June- depends on the individual pair. If your wanting to keep your pairs in the aviery then maybe when you pick up the gouldians in august you might let him pick his own pair. Going to let my wife pick a pair of gouldians of her own so as to try and get her to understand the time and effort that I put into them instead of time spent with her- not meaning I don't spend time with her just cleaning and feeding takes about an hour .

Canaries usually breed from August/September. However this crazy weather means they did go rather late this year. Think you will find it too late, but if you try the worst that will happen is nothing. Cup shaped nest, give a selection of grasses and they like white feathers or tissue to line with. I have both canaries and Gouldians and would not be without either.

My Gouldians have only ever bred between February & September give or take a bit either side.

While here the Gouldians start from the beginning of summer. Location makes a difference.
