Mum is going off at our canaries because they are throwing seed all over the family room,from the cage.i have tried a few different feeders but they still make a mess.
Is there a way to stop them from making a mess..
Thanks

theres not much you can really do to stop them except trying to find ways for when the seed falls out its easy to clean up.

you can buy cage tidies like these...
http://www.pethomesdirect.com.au/Bird-P ... SMALL.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or if mum has a sewing machine make some up for a fraction of the price .

You could put them in the shed.

You can get feeders for canary breeding cabinetsthat fit out side the cage. They are round with a flat side with a hole in it for the canaries to stick their head in, there is also a hole in the top to blow in to blow the husk out. Should be able to get them from a specialty bird shop, or online (most regular pet shop would more than likely not have them). Will try to get a photo next weekend.

Check out ebay for the cage tidy's too and for different feeder types. Maybe something as simple as moving the feeder toward the back of the cage might work.
Maybe something like false grass on the floor of the cage might stop the seed bouncing all over the place too.

We moved our Corella to the garage at night for the same reason . She free ranges or has her cage on the verandah by day and is wheeled into the garage at night .
She still has a cage tidy on her cage to save the mess .

I've never tried it but there is an alternative to seed and that is crumbles (have a look at the
Vetafarm site).

The crumbles will eliminate a lot of mess but it wont happen straight away .
The way they eat the crumbles is different to the way they crack seed and they need a bit of time to adjust and of course with the crumbles you dont have to worry too much about vitamins etc because its all in the crumble .
Extra veg. is always needed and soft food at breeding time of course .
Good idea Gregh.
