Hi all,

Would like to develop a colony of the firetails in an avairy 3mx2m, planted with some small shrubs etc. Any ideas in plant types and the number of pairs sustainable in this size.

Steve Ive just been doing some maths and 3 pair sounds good , adding those extra 4 birds means much less space for each bird ..and I'm assuming you want a healthy and harmonious colony ....sorry Nathan .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

i had a colony of diamonds in a 6x3 metre aviary and only had one pair breeding with any real success, so would have to say that it may not be the best if your main aim is to breed them. if you are still keen on the colony, 3 pairs maximum. they will be aggressive towards other diamonds during breeding, so no more than 3 pair, other wise you'll have plenty of fights, no feathers left on heads and no babies!!

3 pair, try and purchase young birds, even uncoloured young when the weather warms up a bit.
