Lovebird – Budgerigar hybrid

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a Lovebird Budgie hybrid. I have read that a Peachface Lovebird was crossed with a Budgie and produced sterile young.

I am not condoning such a pairing; I was just interested to see if anyone has seen any photo proof?

Never heard of one but surely some one somewhere would have bred one.

One would think they are too far removed ...species wise . But what would I know :D

I agree with Deb, far too removed to produce even sterile (Stryle) hybrids, Their breeding biology is too different as well. Looks like a job for the IVF team to work on. :eureka:

Found 2 references to such hybrid

Most recent is "Handbook of Avian Hybrids of the World"

Author: E.M. McCarthy
Publisher: Oxford University Press (2006)

If you google the title, you will find a site where you can download as e-book free

I didn't bother as I am not that interested but may be a handy reference for those who might be

Well I can find a refernce to such an abomination but not a picture. Have a read at http://didiermervilde.bestofbreeds.net/ ... zation.htm and see if you believe it. There is a database of Avian hybrids that may interest the curious at http://www.bird-hybrids.com/engine.php?LA=EN.

whilst there have certainly been some unusual animal hybrids produced - i would have thought a lovebird/budgie hybrid ridiculously unlikely based on the two genus being so far removed. still - whereas in mammals inter genus hybrids are exceptionally rare, seems far more common in birds..

Melopsittacus undulatus () [Budgerigar]
CHR? DRS. Page (Bird Notes 1911, p. 211), a
generally reliable source, says “Our
esteemed member Mrs. Higginbotham
has four young of the above cross
[Black-cheeked Lovebird × Green
Budgerigar] hatched out and doing well.
The male of a pair of Black-cheeks
forsook his own mate and paired up
with the Budgerigar. Seven eggs were duly
laid, of which four duly hatched out,
both parents shared the duties of
incubation.” Budgerigar hybrids have
also been reported for Agapornis canus,
A. personatus, and A. roseicollis.
Bird Notes 1911; Prestwich 1950–1952.
All hybrids have had a Female Budgie Parent aswell
