Hello to all. I have a young hen Red Faced Parrot finch which is ill. She is showing classic signs of egg binding, fluffed up, on the floor of the aviary, finds it difficult to fly etc. I have brought her in first thiing this morning and left her in my hospital cage and hope she can pass the egg during the day. My confusion comes though that she is not in a cage with a cock bird. Is it possible to be egg bind without fertilisation? If she is not egg bind then I must try to discover the cause of her illness. Any advice?

Cheers, Deegs

Update: Just got a call from my wife. The bird has just passed her egg so she has answered my question for me. Cheers.

Hens will lay eggs without cockbirds being present so the issue of egg binding can still occur.
Ive found a hospital cage works wonders with an egg bound hen. The combination of the heat and the humidity from the water supply does the job, however the initial cause needs to be looked at too.
There is an article on egg binding written by Mike Fidler in one of the newsletters

also a couple of suggestions to offset egg binding in this topic on page 2
