I thought I would try to register onto the NPWS Native Animal Keeper Electronic Record Keeping System tonight. Looks simple, just fill a couple of lines of info to register for the first time. My AKL number, my name, email and date of birth is all you need. I tried 3 times to fill out info. According to the computer I filling in the wrong info details, wonder if my name or DOB has changed without me knowing. I tried in lower and upper case, it did not like either. The default screen states contact the NPWS. Sounding like another computer system that we/they MUST HAVE to make life easier.
Last time I made a phone inquiry about my rego books, the NPWS quoted facts and figures some 3 years out of date. I had to send copies of last 3 returns for them to update the correct quantities held. I wonder if some peanut has loaded the information correctly, so thats why I can not access the system.

Does this sound familiar anyone?

I had the same issue. I rang and they determined my email address was wrong (either they didn't have it or they'd entered it incorrectly into the system). It took a day or two for them to fix the problem and they then sent me an email to confirm it had been corrected.

When you do manage to login, you'll find there are no existing records of your birds from previous paper returns. The first thing you need to do is specify each species and an opening balance from your last paper return. I had no idea which option to use to enter this opening balance. I think I just used purchase and added a note to say this was the opening balance. And all the options appear to be for birds going in or out of your collection, so I don't know how to alter the sex of birds - most of mine remain with sex unknown. It gets annoyed if you try to sell a pair (M/F) when you only have unsexed birds.

Thanks Sam. I will phone them up and try to fix the situation. Not having the info on the system sounds about right. All this effort for 1 rego bird, a this moment, what a pain in the a---. I suppose we all will have to in put data onto the new system, I thought NPWS would be responsible for that, hopefully my fat fingers dont make any mistakes.

Reminds me of an old saying "computers dont make mistakes only the people using it do".

I just happened to have a look yesterday whilst renewing my fishing licence at the licence for birds. They have an option for a manual licence to be sent to you for recording purposes. Not having any previous experience with the NPWS, is it any easier to have the manual records or go for the electronic records? Would like to get some birds that require a licence but this is starting to ward me off. If you have the manual records how do you produce them or do the gestapo lob on the doorstep and demand to see them?

If you have a electronic bird keepers licence you have to print off the blue sheet to show the people selling the licenced birds.

I have no idea what you mean. I no longer have a physical NPWS record book at all - only the actual licence exists on paper.

I am a bit of a luddite, so requested the paper record book in preference to electronic record keeping.
The book was posted, free, and contains carbonised sheets for each species.
You record any protected birds bred, bought, sold or deceased in the course of the year.
On April 30th, you keep the copies and send them the book.
Each sheet looks like this: It works for me...

OK that solves the mystery as to why I dont have a record book . Gee I wish they would tell people these things ...
