got a few of these. one has just hatched 3 young. at the moment no colour on the young ones but with grizzles it comes through in the 1st or 2nd moult. previously i had the set pied. with that one -what you see is what you get,
the guy i bought these off was selling out so i bought the 7 pair. these ones were his best birds and he said they had thrown some near white birds.
now thats what brings in a mutation breeder  and as the story goes about a fool and his money  but its still a lot cheaper than buying sports car so i'm 8-)

How does one know the difference between the 2 pieds and are the genetics different as well?

You have nice examples there.

i read an article on pied cordons. about 3 years ago i bought 2 pair pieds and they cost me $700 then. one pair did nothing and died :(
the other pair breed twice. each time they breed the young were an exact copy of the parents. go to u tube and type in pied cordon blue. that was the hen in question.
now when this pair breed ( the cock and hen both pieds) the young just looked like normal cordons -all 3 birds.
remembering the article which stated grizzles come out normal and colour up. set pieds are what they are from birth.
guy who wrote the article was planing of mating a set with a grizzle but no idea on the outcome.
i bought 7 pairs of these pieds. prior to the purchase i had which i now class as 2 set pied cocks left in the aviary - i thought that there no good to me so sold them  if i had them now i could do the cross and find out for myself

Any chance of getting young from the ones you sold to take your experiment further?
Looks like you got yourself a sports car anyway!

sure anythings possible if i breed a few. maybe in a month or two. i think i have young in nests in another aviary. the cock birds are acting in alarm mode.
i plan to by another z3 in a few months time. i've had a few of them - unable to kick the habit. so i will sell.
i could have bought the Zed after i sold all my blues - but the better half complains about my addiction - buying cars. so i bought a stack of other mutations instead ;-)

Hard to see but are they just Pied? Isnt Grizzle flecks of White in a single feather?

this should explain in detail. an extract from where i read about it.

In this article I am only talking about two type of Pied's. Set Pied and Grizzle Pied. I must point out that now I am using my own terminology regarding Set Pied and Grizzle Pied. Some of you out there may know these types of Pied's as something else again. So I'll explain what my definition of Set and Grizzle Pied's are. Set Pied being that, when the young come out of the nest they mostly carry the Pied colouring that will not change over their lifetime. The Set Pied's usually have a small bib of white, along with varying amounts of white flight feathers and sometimes some white on the belly. They do not change from those markings throughout their lives. Whereas the Grizzle Pied will change as they get older. The Grizzle Pied can come out of the nest without any signs of white and start to colour up after their first or second moult. The toes need not be white to indicate that they carry the Pied gene as I have seen them with dark toes and great amounts of white on their body, head and wings.
