Cleaning Cuttlefish bone

How do you clean this before giving it to the birds if you collect it from the beach.

i normally pop them in a bucket of cold water, get the excess sand and grit off them. let them dry out in the sun for awhile, then i use an old toothbrush to clean and polish them up lol.... it does work. and i always break off the pointy tail just in case.

I recently bought a huge bag of not so clean cuttlefish which were dry and found a rub with sandpaper cleaned them up nicely .

I wash them in fresh water and let them dry out for a day or 2, I also grate some of my Cuttlefish for the gould's, They love it !!

Never thought of grating it :thumbup: I smash it with a hammer ...very messy job even when its in a plastic bag.

I still have Cuttlebone in the for the finches,But they tend to eat more of it if it's grated [ Finer the better ]

I did think about putting it in the food processor :shock: not sure if the food processor would fare too well though .

Oh the hammer usually works better if you have a Corella screaming " come on " at you over and over ...kinda diverts the urge to drown her . :shock:

If you can get your hands on an old style hand mincer, works well without to many fines.
