I have just bought 2 pairs of double bars. Put them in my aviary, stood inside and watched them for one minute. Opened the door and one flew out. Can you believe it, I owned him for the one hour drive from the breeder. Kicking myself for not having some sort of safety net. I can't believe how quick the little bugger was in flying past me. Oh well, lesson learnt I hope.

Omg how infuriating sorry to hear that  I have an Aviary i dont want or cant put a safety door on , so Ive put up in the doorway those beaded curtain things. If it makes you feel a bit better years ago my crimson Rosella got out thru the seed feeder thing cos forgot to lock it

Thanks Ruthie, I will try something like that as well. Because of the position of my aviary I can't have an external safety door and it is too small for an internal one. I will have to do something, can't afford to keep losing finches.

Seen a portable safety door made out of thick wire for frame and shade cloth as covering velcro to outside of avairy door for when you want to go in...when your finished folds down flat looked pretty easy to make and moved to another aviary if required....

Fine netting or shade cloth attatched around the door loosely so you can step under it then through the door, I've got the same problem with one of my avairies and this seems like the simple solution

The netting or shade cloth seems like an easy fix. Thanks for the ideas.

Hi David,
On several of my aviaries I have hung shadecloth over the door and it seems to work ok.
I have noticed that the birds usually try to fly out the top of the doorway, so I have hung a small strip of shadecloth from the inside roof to act as a block to prevent them getting near the doorway.

Sorry for your loss David2406....hope you still get a breeding pair from the other 3.
At least around Camden their should be a few wild doublebars about, so the escapee may just make it in the big world.
No chance for a gouldian or parrotfinch etc.

Three out of four times when I enter their avairy my Doublebars fly passed me. Would have lost them long ago if not for the safety door. Original design for my small avairy complex had three avairys centred round a safety door that allowed access to all avairys. Would strongly suggest that anyone building or buying an avairy/s plan for a safety door as it will save you so much more in birds and lack of grief than it costs in space and money.
